What is Assisted Embryo Hatching?
In vitro fertilization (IVF) is a process of fertilization where an egg is combined with sperm outside the body, in vitro (“in glass”). The process involves monitoring and stimulating a woman’s ovulatory process, removing an ovum or ova (egg or eggs) from the woman’s ovaries and letting sperm fertilize them in a liquid in a laboratory. After the fertilized egg (zygote) undergoes embryo culture for 2–6 days, it is implanted in the same or another woman’s uterus, with the intention of establishing a successful pregnancy.
IVF is a type of assisted reproductive technology (ART). Its introduction was made possible by the pioneering work of British biologist Robert Edwards, who along with Patrick Steptoe succeeded in bringing about the birth of Louise Brown, the first “test-tube baby”, on July 25, 1978. Louise Brown was born as a result of natural cycle IVF where no fertility medications were used to stimulate the woman’s ovulation. Edwards was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2010.

How Does Assisted Hatching Work?
There are three ways that assisted hatching can be performed:
Laser-assisted hatching: A laser is used to create a tiny hole in the zona pellucida. This method is thought to be more precise than using a needle and may cause less damage to the embryo.
Needle-assisted hatching: A needle is used to make a small hole in the zona pellucida. This method is less expensive than laser-assisted hatching, but it may be more likely to damage the embryo.
After the hole has been made in the zona pellucida, the embryo is transferred to the uterus through the cervix. The hope is that the hole will help the embryo hatch out of its shell and implant into the lining of the uterus.

Who Can Benefit from Assisted Hatching?
There are several groups of women who may benefit from assisted hatching:
Women over 35: Women over the age of 35 may have a harder time conceiving because their eggs are more likely to be damaged. Assisted hatching may help improve their chances of pregnancy.
Women who have had trouble conceiving: If you have had difficulty conceiving in the past, you may benefit from assisted hatching. This is especially true if you have had multiple failed IVF cycles or if you have had embryos that did not implant after transfer.
Women using donor eggs: Women who are using donor eggs may also benefit from assisted hatching. This is because donor eggs are often older and may be more difficult to implant.
