What are Fibroids?
fibroids are growths of tissue in the wall of the uterus (womb). They are also called myomas or leiomyomas. Fibroids can range in size from very small (the size of a pea) to very large (the size of a cantaloupe). They can occur singly, or there can be many of them. Fibroids can grow on the outside of the uterus, in the muscle wall of the uterus, or they can grow from the lining of the uterus into the uterine cavity.

What Causes Fibroids?
Fibroids are non-cancerous growths that occur in the uterus. They are also known as myomas or leiomyomas. Fibroids can vary in size, from very small (less than a quarter of an inch) to very large (larger than a grapefruit). They can occur singly or in clusters.
Fibroids are thought to be caused by a combination of genetic and hormonal factors. Heredity may play a role, as fibroids occur more often in women who have a family history of the condition. Hormonal factors may contribute to the growth of fibroids. For example, during pregnancy, when estrogen levels are higher, fibroids usually grow.
There are a number of possible symptoms of fibroids, although some women have no symptoms at all. The most common symptom is heavy menstrual bleeding. Fibroids can also cause pelvic pain, pain during intercourse, and difficulty urinating.
If you think you may have fibroids, it’s important to see your doctor for a proper diagnosis. Fibroids can be diagnosed with a pelvic exam, ultrasound, or MRI. Once fibroids are diagnosed, your doctor will work with you to develop a treatment plan. Treatment options include medication, surgery, or watchful waiting.

Common Symptoms of Fibroids
Heavy menstrual bleeding: This is the most common symptom of fibroids. Women with fibroids may experience longer, heavier, and more painful periods than normal. Bleeding between periods may also occur.
Anemia: Heavy bleeding can lead to anemia, a condition in which there is a decrease in the number of red blood cells. Anemia can cause fatigue, weakness, and shortness of breath.
Pelvic pain and pressure: Fibroids can cause a feeling of pelvic fullness or pressure, and pain during sex.
Urinary frequency and urgency: Fibroids can press on the bladder and cause frequent urination or a feeling of urinary urgency.
Constipation: Fibroids can press on the intestine and cause constipation.
Subfertility: Fibroids can interfere with fertility and pregnancy.
