What is Endometriosis?

Endometriosis is a condition in which the tissue that lines the uterus (endometrium) grows outside of the uterus. This can cause pain, heavy bleeding, and other problems.
The cause of endometriosis is unknown. It is thought to be due to a combination of genetic and environmental factors.
There is no cure for endometriosis, but treatment can help relieve symptoms. Treatment may include medication, surgery, or both.

Endometriosis most commonly affects the ovaries, Fallopian tubes, and the tissue lining the pelvis. However, in rare cases, endometriosis has been found in other parts of the body, such as the lungs, brain, and even the eyes.

Endometriosis affects an estimated 6-10% of women of reproductive age. It is most common in women in their 30s and 40s, but it can occur at any age. Endometriosis is also more common in women who have never given birth, and in women who have a family history of the condition.

Symptoms of Endometriosis

Endometriosis most commonly affects the ovaries, fallopian tubes, and the tissue lining the pelvis. In rare cases, endometriosis may also occur in other parts of the body, such as the lungs, brain, or even the eye. Symptoms of endometriosis can range from mild to severe. Some women with endometriosis have no symptoms at all. Others may have mild cramping and pain during their period. The most severe symptoms include pelvic pain that is not related to the menstrual cycle, painful intercourse, and infertility. There is no cure for endometriosis, but there are treatments that can help relieve symptoms and improve fertility. * Pain in the lower abdomen, pelvis, or lower back, especially during menstruation * Pain during sex * Heavy bleeding during menstruation * Bleeding between periods * Painful bowel movements or urination * Infertility

Understand the

Causes of Endometriosis

Endometriosis is a medical condition that occurs when the endometrium, the tissue that usually lines the inside of the uterus, grows outside of the uterus. This can cause pain, irregular bleeding, and fertility problems. Endometriosis most commonly affects women in their twenties and thirties, but it can occur at any age. There is no single known cause of endometriosis, but there are several possible contributing factors.
Hormonal Imbalance: One theory is that a hormonal imbalance may cause endometriosis. This theory is supported by the fact that the symptoms of endometriosis often improve with pregnancy or menopause, when hormone levels change.
Family History: Women with a family history of endometriosis are more likely to develop the condition themselves. This suggests that there may be a genetic predisposition to the condition.
Immune System Dysfunction: Another theory is that a problem with the immune system may cause endometriosis. Normally, the immune system clears away endometrium that has grown outside the uterus. But in some women, the immune system does not function properly, allowing endometrium to grow unchecked.
Retrograde Menstruation: Retrograde menstruation is when menstrual blood and tissue flow back through the fallopian tubes and into the pelvis, instead of out of the body. This backward flow may deposit endometrium on the ovaries, fallopian tubes, and other pelvic structures. This theory is supported by the fact that endometriosis is more common in women who have heavy or prolonged periods.
Previous Surgery: Women who have had surgery to the pelvis or uterus, such as a hysterectomy or cesarean section, may be more likely to develop endometriosis. This is because surgical procedures can sometimes leave behind endometrial tissue, which can then implant itself elsewhere in the pelvis. While the exact cause of endometriosis is still unknown, these are some of the most likely contributing factors. If you think you may be at risk for endometriosis, talk to your doctor.
